What is a Precinct Committee Person (PC) and Why Are They Important?
A Precinct Committee Person (PC) is the foundation of the Democratic Party in Arizona. PCs represent their community (or precinct) within the party and work to ensure that the voices of Democratic voters are heard. PCs play a critical role in organizing at the local level, building voter turnout, and helping to strengthen the Democratic Party in Apache County.
Why PCs Matter:
● PCs are the link between voters and the party.
● They help register voters and encourage voter participation.
● PCs recruit and support Democratic candidates for local, state, and federal offices.
● They are the frontline leaders in creating a strong and active Democratic presence in their community.
How Are PCs Elected or Appointed?
Elected PCs: During the election year (every two years), PCs are elected by Democratic voters in their precinct. The number of elected PCs per precinct is based on the number of registered Democratic voters in that area. For example, larger precincts with more registered Democrats can elect more PCs.
Appointed PCs: In non-election years, like 2025, PCs can be appointed by the county party chair (with approval from the county board of supervisors) to fill vacancies. This allows us to ensure representation and build the party year-round, not just during election cycles.
What is the Role of State Committee Members?
Once we have precinct committee members in place, they can help select State Committee Members, who represent Apache County at the state level within the Arizona Democratic Party.
State Committee Members:
● Vote on party leadership and policies at the state level.
● Influence decisions that impact the direction of the Democratic Party statewide.
● Help ensure Apache County's unique needs and priorities are considered.
The number of State Committee Members each county can send is determined by the number of PCs in the county, so building our team of PCs directly increases Apache County’s voice in state party decisions.
Why Now?
The 2024 election cycle highlighted the need for strong representation and organization in Apache County. By recruiting and appointing PCs now, we can:
● Build a strong foundation for the 2026 election and beyond.
● Ensure that every community in Apache County has a voice in the Democratic Party.
● Address challenges from the 2024 election by creating a more organized and effective party structure.
How You Can Help
If you care about your community, want to see more Democrats elected, or simply want to help ensure fair and effective representation in Apache County, consider becoming a PC. No prior experience in government or politics is needed – just a willingness to learn and a commitment to strengthening our party.
We are actively appointing PCs this year and would love to have you join us. Together, we can make a difference for Apache County and for Arizona.
